We gotta call today, and the Board Member was not happy with a community member. Seems she felt that she wasn't being appreciated for the volunteer work that she offers her community.
Why you ask?
Answer: Poor communication!
We all like to believe we are effective communicators. But are we really?
Well here are our thoughts on the matter.
At Metropolis, we believe effective communication is all about conveying your messages to other people clearly and unambiguously. It is also about receiving information that others are sending to us with as little distortion as possible. No one said it would be easy trying to maintain harmonious relations with so many different personalities, different backgrounds and different cultures. It is up to all of is to unify communities through effective, continual communication.
At Metropolis, we know that at the heart of our business, is clear communication so we endeavor to do the following:
-Always speak and write with respect. The best advice before you fire off that next text, post or email is to bear in mind, could you live with it appearing on the front page of the Washington Post?
-Put yourself in anothers' shoes as much as possible. Try to understand how he/she feels and how you would feel in the same situation. Remember the Golden Rule...treat others as you would have them treat you. If you live by the Golden Rule, you really can't go wrong!
-Never keep someone in the dark. Always provide some information, even if you don't have all the answers . This will reduce questions and phone calls. Beat them to the punch! Even if it is just to say, this is what I understand or know now, and I will call you again once I have the full picture.
-Praise your community members, owners, and boards member. Don't we all enjoy hearing kind words and gestures now and then?
-Be an active listener. Look them in the eye, clear your mind, and give them your full attention. Wouldn't you want the same?
-Know your audience! This can only happen as we get to know someone. So take the time to get to know them!
