Origin
This entry today is not a typical one for the work place, it’s a little different, but we at Metropolis believe in being a little different, making us better every day.
A mother as defined by the Oxford Dictionary means “A woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth.” In this instance, we feel the Oxford definition doesn’t quite do the term “Mother” justice. It encouraged us to explore further, dig deeper and learn more about our precious celebration and time honored tradition of Motherhood on Sunday, May 10th. We found in fact, that the origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans.
According to National Geographic, “The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood).” Despite this, in some countries Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.
National Geographic goes on to say that “The modern American holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia.” Her campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her beloved mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Anna Jarvis was a never a mother herself, but lived her life in tribute to her own mother and made the celebration of all mothers a lifelong quest.
It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Father's Day and Siblings Day.
On this upcoming celebration of Motherhood, we at Metropolis wish all Mothers a very dear Mother’s Day. We hope that each of us take a moment to thank the mothers in our lives for all that they do, not just this holiday but each and every day, as all parents do.
Happy Mothers Day!

A Mother's Day Celebration
Today's Word of the Day ...
Motherhood
Syllabification: moth·er·hood
Pronunciation: /ˈməT͟Hərˌho͝od/
As we each prepare to celebrate Mother’s Day in our own way, it got us thinking about the definition and origin of Motherhood.
Whether it’s our own mother, an adopted mother, colleague, or neighbor, we believe the celebration of Motherhood is sacred.
